There are many places to catch a beautiful sunset in Southern Nevada, but how many of those places have art perfectly color-coordinating with the sky? Since its debut in 2016, this artwork has blown up as a tourist destination, attracting a steady stream of daily visitors and transforming a quiet stretch of the desert into a vibrant, otherworldly landmark.
So, what is it, exactly? It’s seven towering rock sculptures—or stacks of brightly painted limestone boulders—that were created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone and organized by the Nevada Museum of Art as a large-scale public art project. The fluorescent hues of hot pinks, electric blues, yellows and reds stand in stark contrast to the muted landscape, creating a striking visual, especially during that golden hour before sunset.
Originally intended as a temporary exhibition, Seven Magic Mountains has become one of Southern Nevada’s most recognizable roadside stops, and the site remains free to visit daily, although donations are accepted. Being just a short drive off the Las Vegas strip, it’s an easy detour and great photo opp.
