Ready for a heart-pounding challenge? If the StairMaster at your gym doesn’t scare you, this adventure’s for you.
Located in the quaint town of Manitou Springs, The Manitou Incline is an ascent of 2,744 steps, gaining over 2,000 feet of elevation in just under a mile. Built in 1907 as a cable tram to support a hydroelectric project, it was once a tourist ride until a rockslide in 1990 turned it into one of the most iconic hikes in the West.
This trail is no joke, but the reward? Worth it. A summit view that sweeps across the Rockies will take your breath away (in case the stairs didn’t), leaving you with a sense of accomplishment like no other. You’ll climb past forested switchbacks, friendly fellow hikers and the ghost of that first tram line—still etched in the mountain’s bones.
You’ll need a free reservation to climb, and dogs aren’t allowed for safety. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, bring water and descend via the scenic Barr Trail as going back down the stairs is prohibited. After the climb, recover in Manitou Springs’ local shops and healing mineral springs. Start planning your trip and conquer the Incline at manitousprings.org/where-to-play/manitou-incline.
