In Arizona, springtime means blossoms on saguaros, perfect weather temps and the return of the MLB Cactus League. Each year, Spring Training transforms the Phoenix metro into baseball’s most accessible front row, with 15 teams playing across 10 stadiums with lawn seating as if you’re at a concert—but singing along to “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” instead.
Arizona’s Spring Training story dates back to 1947, when legendary baseball promoter Bill Veeck wanted to bring the excitement closer to his home in Tucson. Thanks to its more central location and drier climate, it stuck, and the Valley of the Sun steadily grew into a baseball destination and now an annual road trip to enjoy every year.
Unlike Florida’s spread-out Grapefruit League, Arizona’s stadiums are all within an hour’s drive, which means you can turn Spring Training into a desert road trip. If you want to experience Spring Training like a true fan, rent or bring your RV and base yourself at one of many nearby resorts—there are many near each stadium. Then, catch multiple games in a day, collect autographs or photos with the up-and-coming athletes and enjoy baseball staples, Southwest style (Sonoran Dogs, anyone?).
Between games, take a hike at Papago Park or the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and see the wildflowers blooming. One note: spring is rattlesnake season. Stay alert, stick to trails and hydrate often. To plan your trip, head to visitarizona.com/experiences/sports/spring-training.
